Drilling methods

Cable Tool Drilling

How it works

A weighted drilling string repeatedly rises and falls to break material. Cuttings are removed from the bore between drilling cycles.

Where it fits

Discuss suitability for your ground conditions and well-construction requirements with the contractor.

Planning considerations

The drilling cycle and material removal affect progress. Method selection should account for access, formation and project demand.

A repeated drilling cycle

The drilling assembly breaks material through repeated impact. The operator removes loosened material and checks the bore as work progresses. Casing and completion details depend on the formation and the intended well design.

Discuss the tradeoffs

Ask your contractor how the ground conditions affect progress, how the bore is supported, and how development and yield testing will be completed. The method alone does not establish the finished water supply.
