Direct Rotary Drilling

How it works

A rotating bit cuts the formation while circulating fluid brings cuttings to the surface.

Where it fits

Often used where fluid supports the bore in unconsolidated or mixed formations.

Planning considerations

Fluid handling, available water, bore stability and well development affect the project.

Cuttings removal and bore support

Circulating fluid carries cuttings out of the bore. Its properties and handling are adjusted to the formation and drilling conditions. Fluid circulation can support unstable material while drilling proceeds.

Completion is a separate step

The contractor considers casing, screen placement and well development after reaching the target formation. Discuss the water supply, fluid handling and access needed for the rig before mobilization.
